Cassis Gemmo is a liquid formula based on a single plant active ingredient: the blackcurrant bud, or Ribes nigrum L. At the maximum recommended dose of 15 drops, it provides 37.5 mg of plant as a dry-weight equivalent. Its 5% concentration and French origin are the main quality markers stated by the manufacturer.
Blackcurrant bud at the heart of the formula
Blackcurrant is a shrub of temperate regions, naturally present in Europe, including France. Its fruit and leaves have been mentioned in herbal literature since the seventeenth century. The use of buds subsequently developed with gemmotherapy, an approach formalised in the late 1950s by the Belgian physician Pol Henry.
The bud is a young plant tissue intended to form the plant’s future leaves and branches. Analyses of blackcurrant-bud preparations have identified several families of natural compounds, including polyphenols—such as catechins and phenolic acids—as well as terpene compounds. These substances form a complex plant combination known as a phytocomplex.
Vitality and recovery
Normal cell function and energy production result in the formation of reactive molecules. They contribute to communication between cells, but their production increases during intense physical exertion, insufficient recovery or a particularly demanding period.
Blackcurrant polyphenols can interact with some of these molecules and help limit chain oxidation reactions. They therefore support the natural mechanisms responsible for maintaining the balance between the production of reactive molecules and their neutralisation.
Blackcurrant bud does not directly provide calories and does not act as an immediate stimulant. Its value lies more in supporting the body’s recovery and adaptation mechanisms. It may therefore have a place during a period of temporary tiredness, after repeated exertion or when the daily pace places greater demands on physical resources.
Physiological response and tissue comfort
When a tissue is under heavy strain, certain defence cells release reactive molecules and enzymes, including myeloperoxidase. This response is useful, but an excessive response may prolong tissue sensitivity and slow the return to comfort.
Research on blackcurrant extracts shows an action on the production of reactive molecules and myeloperoxidase activity. The blackcurrant phytocomplex may therefore help the body maintain a response proportionate to the demands encountered.
This mechanism also explains the traditional use of blackcurrant to support joint comfort. The messengers produced during the inflammatory response make tissues more sensitive and may reduce ease of movement. By contributing to the balance of this response, blackcurrant may support everyday flexibility and comfort. The EMA also recognises the traditional use of blackcurrant leaf for mild joint discomfort.
An alcohol-free liquid form
The glycerinated aqueous form allows gradual, adjustable intake using the dropper. Our blackcurrant formula stands out through an alcohol-free gemmotherapy preparation, offering a gentle alternative to the traditional hydroalcoholic version.
